Could Skipping One Trading Day Shred Your Gains?

TRANSCRIPT:

Missing just one powerful trading day can dramatically impact your annual returns. Through May 22nd, 2025, the S&P 500 is about even year to date, but without April 9th, this year’s best day, the returns would only be about negative 8.7. This stark difference reveals why timing the markets is so risky, as the strongest rebounds often follow periods of fear and volatility. While alarming headlines might tempt you to want to move to cash, investment discipline through market turbulence is what captures those critical recovery days that ultimately drive long-term investment success.

If you expand on this concept and look at 20-year time periods, you will find that missing just the 10 best days over 20 years will generally reduce your returns by about half, and missing the 30 best days will generally take away all of your investment returns over a 20-year time period. For more information, visit the S&P 500 website. about this subject, look in the description below for a link to more statistics about this.
